Public Lands Day at The Great Smoky Mountains Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be sponsoring several projects aimed at improving, cleaning and renovating the park during National Public Lands Day on September 24th.

Those 18 years and up can volunteer to work with park personnel in rebuilding a section of the Forney Ridge Trail. This one's not for the faint of heart...or body...as there will be breaking and setting of rocks to complete the improvements.  Email Christine_Hoyer@nps.gov for information or to volunteer.

Another project is set for the Cades Cove area where work is being done to restore stands of native Indian Grasses with an eye toward providing food, cover and nesting grounds for birds, small mammals, turkeys and deer.  For this one, email Dana_Soehn@nps.gov

The Chimney's Picnic Area will be the site for 68 new grills anchored in cement. The old ones have succumbed to years of harsh weather at 3,000 foot elevation.

Finally, training will be available in the "Leave No Trace" principles at the park visitor centers  including Clingman's Dome, Sugarlands and Oconaluftee. With millions of visitors heading for the park each year, it is important to understand how to maintain its beauty and its standing as one of the nations largest wildlife and flora populations.
